Guided Reading Groups Lesson Plan Template

Use this template to plan a guided reading group lesson. Set the group and instructional goals, select an appropriate text, plan activities for before, during, and after reading, and create a plan for the rest of your students.

For a sample completed document, you may return to your course module and view a completed sample.

Step One: Setting the Group and Instructional Goals

Using the data from your Setting Reading Groups Worksheet, complete the fields below. Refer to the Reading Behaviors to Notice Tool to choose behaviors and set goals for your students.

Step Two: Choose an Appropriate Text

Select the book for your group that aligns to their reading level and allows you to focus on a specific goal that supports their areas of struggle. Then, briefly summarize the book choice and a rationale for how it aligns best with the group's instructional goals.

Step Three: Daily Activities

List the activities you have planned for each day in your guided reading lesson, making sure they are aligned with your instructional goals. Then as you complete each day's activities, record any notes or reflections to allow for modifications and adjustment of the next day's plans.
